Virginia Window Tint Laws (2026 Guide)

Virginia window tint laws determine how much visible light must pass through the windows of vehicles operated on Virginia highways. The applicable limit depends on the window’s location and, for rear windows, whether the vehicle is classified as a passenger car, multipurpose passenger vehicle, or pickup truck.

How Dark Can Window Tint Be in Virginia?

Passenger Cars

• Front side windows: Must allow at least 50% total light transmission
• Rear side windows: Must allow at least 35% total light transmission
• Rear window: Must allow at least 35% total light transmission
• Reflectivity: Light reflectance cannot exceed 20%
• Prohibited effects: Holographic and prism effects are not permitted

SUVs, Multipurpose Passenger Vehicles and Pickup Trucks

• Front side windows: Must allow at least 50% total light transmission
• Rear side windows: May be darker than 35% VLT
• Rear window: May be darker than 35% VLT
• Reflectivity: Light reflectance cannot exceed 20%

Virginia law defines a multipurpose passenger vehicle as one designed to carry no more than 10 people and constructed on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road use. Vehicle classification matters, so an SUV should not automatically be treated as a passenger car when determining the legal rear-window limits.

Vehicles with tinting film on their rear side windows or rear window must also have outside mirrors on both sides that provide the driver with a view of the highway for at least 200 feet behind the vehicle.

What Does VLT Mean?

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission. It measures the percentage of visible light that passes through the complete glass-and-film system.

• 50% VLT allows approximately half of the visible light to pass through
• 35% VLT allows approximately 35% of the visible light to pass through and therefore appears darker

The legal measurement applies to the finished window—not simply the number printed on the film box. Factory automotive glass already reduces some visible light, so installing a film labeled 50% does not necessarily produce a finished window measuring exactly 50% VLT.

It is also important not to confuse darkness with heat performance. A darker film does not automatically reject more heat. Modern ceramic films can provide substantially better solar-energy rejection than conventional darker films while maintaining greater visible-light transmission.

Virginia Windshield Tint Rules

Without a medical authorization, Virginia permits a sunshield only in the uppermost portion of the windshield. The permitted area is generally the manufacturer’s AS-1 line or the upper five-inch sunshield area, depending on the windshield and vehicle.

Darkening film should not be installed below the permitted upper sunshield area unless the vehicle owner has obtained the appropriate Virginia medical authorization. Virginia law also permits certain clear windshield films that remain consistent with applicable federal glazing standards.

Medical Exemptions for Window Tint in Virginia

Virginia DMV may issue a medical sun-shading authorization to a person whose medical condition requires protection from direct sunlight or bright artificial light.

• The authorization should be obtained before the darker sun-shading or tinting is installed
• The applicant and an authorized medical professional must complete the required DMV application
• Once approved, the sun-shading authorization is recorded through the vehicle’s registration
• The authorized tint levels depend on the window and vehicle classification

Virginia’s Center High-Mount Brake-Light Requirement

The vehicle’s center high-mount stop lamp—commonly called the third brake light—must remain operational and visible as required. Tint should be installed so it does not improperly obstruct the lamp or interfere with its required visibility.
